Book Review: Unlocking the Secret of the Erev Rav
(by B. R. Levy)
The Erev Rav (the mysterious ‘mixed multitude’ of Egyptians who joined the Jewish people upon their liberation from Pharaoh’s Egypt) has long struck me as one of the deepest and most fascinating topics in Jewish/Kabalistic thought. Now, after reading B.R. Levy’s comprehensive yet user-friendly exposition of the subject, I realize that it is (at least it had been to me) also one of the most misunderstood.
In a work equally suited to scholars and laymen, the author skillfully weaves Talmudic, Chasidic, and Kabalistic sources to reveal the spiritual roots of the Erev Rav and provides a clear map of how to apply this knowledge as a springboard to personal and global healing.
Levy’s solidly-sourced conclusions are at times shocking, yet are also uplifting, inspiring, and compassionate. Unlocking the Secret of the Erev Rav is a work well done – and well worth reading.
