“At the Base of the Mountain”
On Shavuos we read the Torah’s account
Of how every Jew stood at the foot of the Mount.
Trembling yet empowered by that awesome event
As the world reverted to the way it was meant.
Thunder was seen and lightning was heard,
Then all was quiet before Hashem’s piercing word
It was suddenly obvious to each and every nation
That the letters of His speech are the source of Creation.
And that we, B’nei Yisrael are His Chosen folk
Awareness of G-d’s Presence: our mission to evoke
For afterwards when all was settled and quiet
Mitzvos filled our lives dictating even our diet.
To reveal the G-dly source of everyday things
Lifting them on High, as free-will offerings.
Bringing together both Heaven and Earth
A job most suited for a people of worth.
Throughout the ages doing mitzvos as bidden
Releasing holy sparks that within them were hidden.
Shuls and study halls were built wherever Jews roam
Yet the center of Judaism is to be found in the home.
